Our Guide to Spending 24 Hours in the Southmoreland Neighborhood

KC Daily

This past week, we had dinner at Oil on Linen inside the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art for KC Restaurant Week. We arrived a little early, so we spent a few minutes walking around the neighborhood. It was a great reminder that the Southmoreland neighborhood is really cool.

If you are looking for a quick Kansas City staycation, here’s a guide to spending 24 hours in the Southmoreland neighborhood:

  • 🏠 Stay: Classic architecture and artistic design are on full display throughout Southmoreland. Three historic houses in the neighborhood have been converted into some of Kansas City’s best boutique hotels: The Truitt, The Aida, or Southmoreland on the Plaza.

  • 🖼️ Play: The neighborhood is home to two of Kansas City’s best museums: The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. If the weather is nice, take a scenic walk through the campus at KCAI, through the surrounding neighborhoods to take in some of KC’s grandest homes, or through the Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park.

  • 🍴Eat & Drink: As previously mentioned, Oil on Linen inside the Kemper is an amazing addition to the Kansas City culinary scene (note - they only offer dinner on Thursday nights). Another option is Rozelle Court Restaurant inside the Nelson-Atkins, which offers perhaps the most scenic lunch in KC. Or simply grab a coffee and a pastry at Thou Mayest or Café Nerman.
