Celebrating Martin Luther King Day in Kansas City
Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, marking 40 years since the day was first celebrated as a federal holiday in 1986.
American Icon: Martin Luther King Jr. led the American civil rights movement during the 1950s and 1960s. A Baptist minister, he championed nonviolent resistance against racial segregation through pivotal campaigns, including the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the 1963 March on Washington, where he delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech.
ML-KC: Dr. King visited the Kansas City area at least six times between 1957-1968. (trivia below) attending rallies in 1961 and 1964. The City of Kansas City honors Dr. King with Martin Luther King Jr. Park just east of the Country Club Plaza area, as well as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard — a five-mile stretch connecting the South Plaza to Brush Creek Community Center.
