A Palace Fit For A King

Populous

The Kansas City Royals are one step closer to choosing their new home, having released renderings yesterday of what each location could look like.

  • Downtown: The proposed location in the East Village, just northeast of City Hall in Downtown Kansas City, would offer a spectacular view of Downtown, a sizable economic boost to the area, and a walking bridge across the highway to parking space.

  • North Kansas City: The North Kansas City spot, located just a couple of miles north of Downtown, would bring a new district called the “Crown District” that would include a park with a large water feature and a large retail space outside of the stadium.

  • Summer’s Almost Over: Earlier this month the Royals announced that the new stadium could be completed by 2027 and that they will announce the location of the stadium by “late summer”. For those of you checking a calendar, it’s August 23rd…

Community

Giving Brush Creek A Glow Up

KC Daily

For nearly a century, Kansas City has struggled to make Brush Creek a thriving hub due to floods, neglect, and misfortune. Now, a fresh master plan informed by community input aims to make Brush Creek a destination by focusing on amenities rather than flood control.

  • It Isn’t Great: Brush Creek, the creek that runs from the Plaza to the Blue River, currently appears lackluster, with parked gondolas floating in murky water and scattered trash. Previous attempts in decades past have all resulted in poor design leading to safety concerns, flooding, or, quite frankly, unappealing architecture.

  • A New Day?: The new plan, developed by Kansas City and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, covers improvements from the Paseo to Coal Mine Road. Unlike previous flood-focused strategies, this plan prioritizes input from the community to create recreational opportunities, ecosystem restoration, and cultural enhancements.

  • The New San Antonio: After feedback sessions from local residents, the plan envisions pedestrian bridges, a skate park, stream enhancements, park upgrades, event spaces, and more. Optimism surrounds the project, echoing San Antonio's Riverwalk success.

As residents hope for a revitalized creek, the plan offers a fresh start. Despite the challenges of funding and implementation, optimism remains high for a vibrant, sustainable, and beloved community amenity. To read more, check out this article here from KCUR.

Thank You, North Dakota

Sickies Garage

Sickies Garage, the new garage-themed burger chain from Fargo, North Dakota, is opening a new location in Overland Park where Red Robin used to stand.

  • Burger Heaven: Known for “extreme burgers”, Sickies' standout burgers include the Wild Hog, Philly, Jesse James, Glazed Doughnut, and the signature Sickies Burger. With a variety of specialty sauces and tons of extras on each burger, it’s clear why this chain took off.

  • Boozy Shakes: Beyond burgers, the menu offers chicken wings, mashed potato bowls, mac and cheese bowls, homestyle dinners, Kobe burgers, chicken sandwiches, salads, and appetizers. The restaurant boasts 50+ craft beers and boozy milkshakes.

  • Spreading Sickies: The burger chain, founded in 2012, has exploded as of late to more than 10 locations in 9 states all across the US. The newest location in Joco takes the place of the Red Robin at 95th and Metcalf which stood there for 15 years.

No timeline has been set for the grand opening of the restaurant, but it may take more time than the usual opening as the location will be renovated to fit Sickies’ service station or garage theme.
