Prairie Village Enacts Ban on Short-Term Rentals

City of Prairie Village

The Prairie Village City Council voted to ban short-term rentals within city limits, which affects properties listed on sites such as Airbnb and Vrbo.

  • Bye-bye, bnb: The city council voted 10-2 in favor of the ban, which prohibits residents from entering into rental agreements that are less than 30 days in length. Residents who opposed short-term rentals cited concerns of safety, an increase in nuisance, and a decrease in “neighborliness”.

  • Pay the Price: Rentals of more than 30 days in length will still be allowed, but violations of the new ordinance will carry a fine of $500. The city stated that there are roughly 30 short-term rental properties in Prairie Village right now, with many owners of those properties coming out vocally against the ban.

The ban goes into effect on November 1st, 2025.
