Cornflower Baked Goods Opens Tomorrow in Leawood
Cornflower Baked Goods
A new neighborhood bakery called Cornflower Baked Goods opens its doors tomorrow, August 5th, in Leawood’s Mission Farms.
Blooming Now: Cornflower Baked Goods is a project from Megan Garrelts, who is bringing fresh-baked classics and new recipes from her pastry kitchens at Rye. The grand opening tomorrow will run from 7am-3pm, with normal hours beginning on Thursday, August 6th.
Sweet Treats: Guests can expect cinnamon rolls, pies, cakes, and more freshly-baked goods. It will also serve coffee from Arkansas-based Onyx, which was named the No. 1 coffee shop in the world in 2026.
Cornflower Baked Goods will be located at 10555 Mission Road.

The KC Zoo is Building a New Conservation & Learning Center
Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium
The Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium has begun construction on a major expansion of its Zoo Learning Center, now renamed the Conservation & Learning Center.
What's Being Built: Designed by IAA KC with construction by Monarch Build, the project more than doubles the Zoo's capacity for educational programming. New additions include a makerspace and science lab, a quiet room for guests with sensory needs, a mother's room, additional restrooms, a large multifunction room for meetings and events, and two new animal habitats: one for bald eagles and one for bobcats.
Animal Education: The expansion gives the Zoo significantly more space for classrooms and office operations, helping the team better serve students, guests, employees, and animals in their care, all under one roof near the main entrance.

Free Root Beer Floats at The Raphael Hotel This Thursday
The Raphael Hotel
The Raphael Hotel is hosting a Root Beer Float Social in its lobby this Thursday from 10am-4pm, in honor of National Root Beer Float Day, with free floats for all and donations benefiting the University of Kansas Medical Center's Pediatrics Unit.
Float On Over: The event is free and open to the public, no hotel stay required! Ice cream is donated by Betty Rae's. Every dollar raised stays in Kansas City and goes directly toward pediatric equipment, research, patient services, and charitable care for kids and families receiving care at the University of Kansas Medical Center Pediatric Unit.
Fun Fact: National Root Beer Float Day holds special meaning for Marriott Hotels. In 1927, founders Alice and J. Willard Marriott launched a 9-seat A&W Root Beer stand in Washington, D.C., which eventually grew into the global restaurant company. Every year, Marriott honors those roots with root beer float fundraisers benefiting the Children's Miracle Network.
The Raphael Hotel is located at 325 Ward Parkway on the Country Club Plaza.
