Kansas City Ice Cream Guide 🍦

I scream, you scream, Kansas City screams for ice cream! Gelato, custard, dairy-free, frozen yogurt, etc., there is something to be found for everyone when hunting for our favorite frozen treat. We highlight some of our favorite ice cream shops around the metro to help you know where to go!

Boasting four locations (soon to be five) and a truck that serves their treats all around town, Betty Rae’s is one of the most recognizable names in ice cream in Kansas City. From staples like Cookies and Cream or Mint & Chocolate Flakes to adventurous flavors that you won’t find anywhere else (ahem, Joe’s Burnt End BBQ), there are flavors for every sweet tooth to be found here!

Fairway Creamery offers donuts, coffee, breakfast dishes, and of course their staple ice cream. Try one of their always-rotating soft-serve flavors, or get it in the form of a malt/shake/float. Our favorite? The Salted Pretzel Root Beer Float.

This Brookside shop quickly became a heavy-hitter in KC’s ice cream scene, by offering custard “French-style”. Their made-in-house custard uses more egg yolk than traditional ice cream and is put in a blast freezer so it isn’t soft-serve. With flavors rotating often, stop in soon and early as they are likely to sell out of fan favorites such as Cinnamon Churro.

Kansas City’s favorite walk-up ice cream shop also offers some of the widest variety of flavors in the area. Strawberry Soda Pop, Malted Mushroom, Black Sesame, and Strawberry Birthday Cake brewed with an IPA; the list of flavors that will pique your curiosity goes on and on. They also offer a handful of dairy-free options and ice cream by the pint.

Our favorite pick for ice cream's low-fat cousin, Gelato, comes from The Flying Cow. As the sister shop of KC’s famous chocolate shop, Annedore’s, sweet treats run in the family. Offering cups, sundaes, and a long list of toppings, this gelato spot is sure to please the whole family.

Our favorite ice cream shop with a cause! The Golden Scoop is a non-profit ice cream and coffee shop that employs individuals with developmental disabilities. Their pre-packaged ice creams are sold by the scoop, pint, or quart; and the flavors and service will have you leaving with a smile.
