Iconic Local Wiffle Ball Field Faces Uncertain Future

Will Severns

If you’ve walked along the east side of Loose Park, you’ve probably noticed something unique at the corner of W 52nd St. and Wornall Road: a wiffle ball field.

  • Field for Sale: The iconic field now faces an uncertain future, as owner Joe Ungashick will soon list his home. Ungashick built the field in his front yard in 2011 as a gathering place for local kids to play wiffle, which features basepaths, a Green Monster-type fence in left field, a scoreboard, and PA system. The homes’ new owner will ultimately decide on the future of the field.

  • Backyard Baseball: The field, officially called Wiffle at the Hollow, has hosted a variety of leagues and charity events over the years, welcoming local celebrities like George Brett, Matt Besler, and Mitch Holthus. The field has draw national attention over its years, including being highlighted by The Athletic/The New York Times in 2019.
