Oleo Coffee

The founders of Marcell Coffee are bringing their exclusive retail-only coffee brand, Take Care by Oleo Coffee, to a location that long-time coffee fans may be familiar with in the Crossroads.

  • New Digs: Christopher Oppenhuis and Mark Sappington, creators of Marcell Coffee, a successful wholesale roasting company, are introducing Take Care as a dynamic concept, uniting a brick-and-mortar space at 419 E. 18th St. where Thou Mayest originally stood with their direct-to-consumer roasting brand, OLEO Coffee.

  • Fresh Brews: Starting with a small rotating menu of a light roast, medium roast, dark roast, and espresso selection, Take Care will also offer an in-house bakery offering biscuits with seasonal preserves.

  • Authentic And Ethical: One cool feature about the coffee shop is that the coffee mainly comes from single-origin farms that the owners have been to personally and have vetted themselves.

To see their new location in the Crossroads will check out their Instagram here. While no opening date has been set, Take Care’s social media points towards an opening sometime this fall.

Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport

Kansas City Manager Brian Platt is considering the controversial move of closing Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport to pave the way for high-rise apartment construction, igniting a debate that could reshape the city's skyline and urban landscape.

  • Different Views: Platt's proposal to shutter the downtown airport has stirred strong opinions among key business players and aviation enthusiasts who value the airport's convenient location for corporate jets, private planes, and entertainment events

  • Skyline or Airline: As Platt aims to streamline high-rise construction near downtown, his plan to close the airport raises the stakes for the city's growth ambitions, highlighting the tension between facilitating urban expansion and preserving an integral aviation hub. The decision would likely shape the city's future skyline and urban development strategies going forward.

  • A win-win?: The debate centers around the concept of allowing developers to construct high-rises in specific areas while considering airspace safety. The airport, once the main commercial hub, might make way for downtown development, reflecting the dynamic interplay between historical landmarks and modern urban transformation.

Do As The Locals Do

KC Daily

Shop Local KC, a well-known retail gift and flower shop in Kansas City, is closing its flagship Midtown location and gearing up for the grand opening of a new storefront in Brookside.

  • Back to Her Roots: Owner Mabry Van Dieren had originally wanted to put the shop in Brookside, so when she found that the space in Midtown was no longer going to be available, she leaped at the opportunity to make the move.

  • Contributing to Brookside: Shop Local KC's Brookside store will be smaller, focusing on flowers to address a local gap where Van Dieren says she is excited to contribute to Brookside's diverse local business community as a woman-owned business.

  • Citywide Expansion: In addition to the Brookside location, Shop Local KC recently opened a store in Crown Center and the new airport terminal, continuing their business model by returning over $160K in revenue to local makers of goods.

You can visit Shop Local KC in their new Brookside location starting September 1st.
