Changing Lives One Scoop at a Time

KC Daily

The Golden Scoop, an Overland Park-based ice cream shop known for employing adults with developmental disabilities, might just be opening another location. Since opening in April 2021, this ice cream and coffee shop has been making good on its goal of “changing lives one scoop at a time”.

New Location: Due to the massive success that their first store has been in the lives of the people they employ and those they serve, The Golden Scoop is vying for a new location off Antioch and 169 highway.

Donate: To open that location and employ roughly 25 new adults with developmental disabilities, they are seeking another $100K in donations.

Seen them Around?: That’s probably because they have begun selling their ice cream with a cause in the Children’s Mercy gift shop, as well as at the new favorite hangout for pickleballers and food lovers alike, SERV, off 91st and Metcalf.

Development

This Bridge Rocks

Flying Truss LLC/Multistudio

If you haven’t spent much time across the river in KCK, that may change soon. This year, the Kansas-based Building a Stronger Economy (BASE) program has pledged to shell out over $11M in funding to build infrastructure geared toward economic development. One such project is the Rock Island Bridge development.

Rock Island: Named after the Rock Island Trail, and not your dad’s favorite genre of music, the bridge project will connect the famous West Bottoms and KCK old stockyard areas.

The Project: After receiving nearly four million dollars from this year’s BASE program, the Rock Island Bridge will be the perfect place to eat, drink, and enjoy music while you watch the Kaw River roll by.

The Others: The other BASE winners will split the rest of the $11M awarded to the area. Winners range from the Olathe Chamber of Commerce to the Black Mastermind Group in Wyandotte County.

After so much success from the BASE program around the metro, here’s to hoping the Royals will also find themselves on base more often.

Seeing The Folks

KC Folk Fest

If you’re the type of person who enjoys sitting on your porch to the smooth sounds of a piano, flute, or mandolin- this is the event for you. KC Folk Fest, a local non-profit to bring folk to the people, will be hosting its second annual Folk Fest this year May 20 from 12-8 pm at Washington Square Park.

Folk for the Folks: Initially started to be a way for the local community to share in the Folk at the Folk Alliance International, the event just launched in May of last year.

All Folks Welcome: This year’s Fest is a free event to celebrate the music and arts of our neighborhood and region.

Folk Tunes: The Festival will include food trucks, local art, song, poetry, and dance; and will be headlined by artists Krystle Warren, Solomon Dorsey, and Nokosee Fields.

Whether you’re looking for new music, new art, new crafts, or just a fun and laid-back environment, the KC Folk Fest will provide a great way to plug into your local community.

Music

KC Label Making Waves

Channa Steinmetz, Startland News

When you think of the music industry, you probably think of cities like Los Angeles, New York City, or Nashville. If you ask Casio McCombs and Ryan Tanner Mueller of Yume Sound, they may tell you that KC belongs on that list.

Yume: After working together in 2016, the duo founded their label Yume Sound. Yume is Japanese for ‘dream’ and is pronounced similarly to “you and me”

Big Names: initially making connections in LA, the duo has worked with huge artists such as Waka Flocka, Lil Baby, and Quay.

4444: Since having to adjust to the new landscape of music brought about by the pandemic, Yume has produced music for many local artists including 4444, a single by Shang. Give it a listen on Spotify here.

For more information on the duo, read the full article from Startland News.
