Abandoned Kansas

Happy Monday, Kansas City! Local high school students are documenting the restoration of the Sauer Castle.

  • Castle On The Hill: The Sauer Castle is a Kansas City landmark that was built in the 1870s along the Santa Fe Trail. The original Sauer family lived in the castle until 1955 leaving a slowly decaying building that’s seen generally unsuccessful attempts to renovate ever since.

  • Under New Management: That is until the Heitmann family purchased the property in 2022. The Heitmann’s have been successfully renovating the castle and recently welcomed in students from Grandview High School to document the process.

  • Documentary Now: Kegen Adcock and Maya Christiansen Wright are juniors at GHS who began producing a new documentary that will show the Sauer Castle’s journey from derelict to completion by its target of 2025.

If you want to follow the process, you can watch Adcock and Christiansen Wright’s work here.

Development

When Lux Gives You Lemons

NorthPoint Development

After Lux Living decided to punt on its $55m apartment complex, NorthPoint Development stepped in to develop the riverfront real estate.

  • This Is The Height Of Luxury: Last year, the Port Authority approved Lux Living’s plans for an apartment complex along the Berkley Riverfront. The property will now serve as the second part of NorthPoint’s CORE apartments, a $60m development adjacent to the lot.

  • Don’t Forget Your Core: NorthPoint’s new apartment complex will be a smaller-scale, $42m apartment complex. CORE’s second phase will be 152 rooms and lay slightly closer to the water, enjoying front-row spots to the KC Current’s planned route for home game parades

  • Can Work This Out?: NorthPoint Development had initially balked at the property due to foreseen complications with the site such as existing storm sewers, existing pedestrian bike lanes, and contaminated land which needs to be remediated.

No timeline has been set for the development. Interestingly enough, this is the second development NorthPoint has purchased from Lux Living after Lux failed to follow through on development plans.

Let’s Talk Playoffs

CBS Sports

If you’re like most readers, you are fully aware that the Chiefs defeated the Dolphins on Saturday Night. However, we thought you’d appreciate it if we gave you some insight to add to your conversations this week.

  • The New Cold Plunge: At -4 degrees Fahrenheit, not only was this the coldest game at Arrowhead ever, but it ranked 4th for the coldest game in NFL history. What may have been missed is that the Chiefs prepared for this game by practicing outside all week.

  • A Little Cold Never Hurt Anyone?: Temperatures like that left fans wondering why the NFL would let the Chiefs kickoff and yet postpone the Bills-Steelers game in Western New York. According to the NFL, the snowstorm in Buffalo caused hazardous travel conditions while the temps in KC did not.

  • So… What Next?: Speaking of the Bills vs Steelers game, the Chiefs won’t know who they play next until that game is concluded today at 3:30. If the Bills win, the Chiefs will play in Buffalo next weekend. If the Steelers win, the Chiefs will host the Houston Texans at Arrowhead.

The Bills-Steelers game will kick off today at 3:30 on CBS/Paramount. We’ll release more details about the Chiefs’ next opponent as we know more.
