Johnson County Parks & Recreation to Build Largest Park in It’s History

Thomas Arnhold

The Johnson County Parks and Recreation District has begun planning a new 3,000-acre park near the Greater Kill Creek area.

  • Acres on Acres: The proposed park would be the largest park in the District’s history, incorporate 2000+ acres of Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant (SFAAP) into the current Kill Creek Park south of De Soto, KS. The plan is a part of the Greater Kill Creek Park Area Master Plan.

  • The Great Outdoors: Kill Creek Park boasts a diverse parkland with deep history and areas to explore. The Park features a variety of natural areas and streamways, old proving grounds from the SFAAP, Robert’s Lake, and more. The master plan also includes the addition of 9 trailhead access points.

Five Ideas for the River Market Trolley 🚋

Donutology

After the unfortunate news earlier this week that Donutology would be closing its River Market location, we asked our readers what they’d like to see replace the space in the famed River Market Trolley. Shoutout to reader Ashley I., who gave us not one, but FIVE ideas for the space! Here’s her pitch:

  • Craft Cocktail & Mocktail Bar on Wheels: A micro-bar offering seasonal craft cocktails and elevated zero-proof drinks using local spirits, shrubs, and mixers. Cocktail-making classes or spirit tasting flights on weekend afternoons.

  • Vinyl & Vibes Listening Trolley: A tiny record bar where people can buy vinyls, listen to curated records, and sip coffee or natural wine. Monthly live DJ sets or Sunday morning “Lo-Fi + Latte” coffee events.

  • KC Pickle Stop: All things pickled and fermented — pickled snacks (eggs, green beans, radish, mango), small pickle flights, picklebacks with local spirits, and Charcuterie boards with creative pickled accompaniments. Sell jars of house-made pickles with rotating seasonal flavors and spicy options.

  • Sourdough Sammy Bar: Gourmet, hot sourdough sandwiches paired with beers, spirits, and wines. Weekend “Breakfast Sammie Club” with loyalty punch cards and rotating chef specials.

  • The Green Line - THC Lounge and Micro-Bakery: A retro-chic, walk-up cannabis bakery and beverage bar featuring low-dose THC-infused treats and drinks.
