Kansas City’s First Outdoor Chess Park Opens on the Rock Island Bridge

@lens_stop/IG

Kansas City Chess Park is now open on the Rock Island Bridge, and it's the city's first dedicated outdoor chess park.

  • Check, Mate: The park sits on the Rock Island Bridge's West Truss, with permanent game tables overlooking the Kansas River. It's free and open to all ages and skill levels. Bring your own pieces or borrow one of the free sets. Hours are 11am-10pm Sunday through Thursday and 11am-11pm Friday and Saturday.

  • Bridging the Board: Rock Island already bills itself as the nation's first entertainment district on a bridge. CEO Mike Zeller says this is likely the world's first chess park on one, too. The bridge's creative directors see chess as a way to cross every divide in the city, right down to the state line the bridge spans.

The bridge is currently only accessible from the Missouri entrance at 1799 American Royal Dr., but the Kansas-side entrance is expected to open this fall.

Dark Forest Returns to Powell Gardens This Month

Powell Gardens

Into the woods we go. Dark Forest returns to Powell Gardens in Kingsville for six nights of after-dark wandering on October 16-17, 22-24, and 30-31.

  • Spellbound: Presented with KC's own Quixotic, Dark Forest is an immersive, one-mile hike along an unpaved trail filled with light shows, fog, live performers, and music. The performances are eerie, but with no jump scares or gore. It's not recommended for anyone under 13, and October 22nd is a 21+ night.

  • Fire It Up: Gates open at 5:30pm, the trail opens at 7pm, and last entry is at 8:45pm. Before your trail time, browse local artists at the Mystic Faire or add on the Fire Feast, a wood-fired dinner with fire performances from 6:30-8:30pm. VIP Fast Passes skip the line and include two drinks.

Tickets are limited and must be purchased in advance. Get yours HERE.

Wacky Wednesday 🤪

In 1841, Dr. David Waldo, the namesake of KC’s Waldo neighborhood, purchased a 1000-acre tract of land after the advice of some friends.

The tract ran from Gregory Blvd. on the north, to 91st Street on the south, from Holmes on the east to State Line on the west. It eventually expanded to 2,400 acres and ultimately became one of KC’s quirkiest neighborhoods.

Thanks for reading today’s newsletter. If you enjoyed it, share it with someone who lives in Waldo.
