UMKC Health Gets A Upgrade

UMKC

Happy Thursday, Kansas City! UMKC is getting a new $120M medical and dental building and the renderings look amazing.

  • Room For Learning: This week, UMKC released renderings of what the new project will look like. The new 6-story, 200,000-square-foot building will replace the on-campus parking lot currently at 25th and Charlotte.

  • Orders Thank You Letters: The $120M building is being built thanks in part to the Hall Family’s $15M donation to help build what will be known as the Healthcare Innovation and Delivery Building.

  • Many Hands: The university also secured over $70M in funding from the state with the Sunderland Foundation kicking in another $30M toward the building.

The Healthcare Innovation and Delivery Building is just one of many projects being developed on Hospital Hill in recent years. It joins the Children’s Mercy Tower and University Health buildings I & II as well.

Can KC Keep The Big XII Tournament?

Big 12 Conference

The Big XII Women’s Basketball media day was this week, and a huge topic of conversation was whether Kansas City will continue to host the Big XII tournament for men’s and women’s basketball.

  • Signs Look Good: After receiving questions about potentially moving the tournament, commissioner Brett Yormark said that thanks to the tournament’s success, they are in talks to keep it here until 2031.

  • Proven Success: Last year’s tournament was a huge success financially as well. The men’s tournament drew its highest ticket-grossing in history and the women’s tournament was up 20% year over year.

  • Boosting Confidence: At least one person is counting the good omen as a success. Kathy Nelson, president and CEO of KC Sports Commission and Visit KC, said this is a huge win and one that’s been in the works for a while.

The Big XII tournament will resume in March of 2024 with both the men’s and women’s tournaments coming to the T Mobile Center. We also like to consider this event the unofficial beginning of spring.
