Kansas City Area’s Top Public High Schools for 2026-2027

Sumner Academy of Arts and Science

U.S. News & World Report recently released its list of the best public high schools in the Kansas City, MO area for 2026-2027.

Top of Class: These rankings were determined by weighing factors like college readiness, graduation rates, college curriculum breadth index, and state assessment proficiency and performance. The top-ranked school in the Kansas City, MO area for 2026-2027 is Sumner Academy of Arts and Science in KCK.
Making a Statement: Sumner Academy was also No. 1 in the state of Kansas, with Blue Valley Schools taking spots 2-6. Nine out of the top ten schools in Kansas are located in the KC metro. Academie Lafayette IHS was the top-ranked KC area school in Missouri, landing at No. 5.

Dinger Season: Sandlot Social offers 4v4 simulated baseball games inside their high-tech batting bays. Every game is played against another team using HitTrax technology, which tracks wins, losses, and stats over the 10-week season. Just here for a good time? A full bar and full food menu are available!
Weeknight Fun: Two leagues kick off on October 5th: an any gender league on Monday nights, and a co-ed league on Tuesday nights. Players must be 18 years old, and the fee is $400 per team. Fall leagues run through December 7th and 8th.

SantaCaliGon Days takes over Historic Independence Square for its 54th year, September 4-7, for one of the KC area’s favorite free festivals.

Headed West: This weekend’s festival will draw thousands of attendees, hundreds of vendors, carnival rides, and four days of live entertainment on the historic square at 112 W. Lexington Ave. The festival commemorates the origins of the Santa Fe, California, and Oregon Trails — the westward expansion routes that launched from this very spot.
Come One, Come All: General admission is free all four days with unlimited ride armbands for sale ($27 online, $36 at the event). Main Stage & Beer Garden admission is just $5 for guests 5 and older. The full stage schedule and festival map can be found online.

SantaCaliGon is presented by the Independence Chamber of Commerce, and kicks off this Friday, September 4th at noon.
