KC's Heart-Shaped Forest is Being Restored, Reopens Soon

Heart Forest

An 8-acre, heart-shaped forest near KCI is being restored to welcome visitors to Kansas City before the World Cup kicks off next month.

  • The Story: In 1990, hundreds of volunteers planted nearly 1,700 trees in heart-shaped rings near the intersection of N. Brightwell Rd. and NW 104th St. The heart shape was designed to be visible from overhead, and represents the heart of America. Over the decades, the paths became overgrown, the canopy blurred the shape, and the forest was largely forgotten.

  • Race Against Nature: Kansas City architect Bob Berkebile is racing to open Heart Forest to the public before the first World Cup match, alongside Brian Weinberg of the Foundation for Regeneration. Together, they are trimming the canopy, cutting new trails, and building a welcome plaza with parking and signage.

A public opening is expected in June, but you can request an appointment-only visit HERE.
