Jayhawks Lead The Way Against Cancer

The University of Kansas Cancer Center

The University of Kansas Health System is unveiling plans for its $143 million cancer center in Kansas City, Kansas thanks to a massive donation from the Sunderland Foundation.

  • KU vs Cancer: The new cancer center will consolidate all 12 of the KU Med cancer outpatient clinics in the area into one comprehensive care unit where patients will receive treatment and research will be conducted.

  • The Gold Standard: News of the new cancer center comes just one year after The National Cancer Institute designated KU as one of only 53 comprehensive cancer centers. Considered the Gold Standard in cancer treatment, NCI comprehensive care patients are 25% more like to survive than if treated elsewhere.

  • Sunderland: The Sunderland Foundation is a family foundation rooted in Kansas City with a history of supporting capital building projects of non-profits. The $100M to KU Med is their largest donation to date.

With funding secured, the plan is to break ground in the fall of 2024 at the earliest with the new center being built in multiple phases.

The Show-Me Series of BBQ

KC Daily

Horsefeather Social, located on the 7th floor of the Loews Hotel, is hosting a BBQ competition between St. Louis and KC which will coincide with the Show-Me Series between the Royals and the Cardinals.

  • I-70 Rivalry: St. Louis residents have long been mistaken in thinking that their BBQ compares to Kansas City’s famous pit masters. On August 12, Horsefeather Social will host a lunchtime competition with each hometown bringing their signature meats and letting the attendees cast their votes for the BBQ town crown.

  • What’s at stake?: Besides hometown pride, all votes will be entered into a raffle where the winner will receive a free 2-night stay at either the Loews Hotel in KC or the Live by Loews St. Louis Hotel.

  • On the Field: The event will begin at 1 pm and finish at 6:05 pm coinciding with the Show-Me Series. Tickets are available for purchase here.

Baseball tickets are not included and space is limited for the event at Loews Hotel, so you should purchase your tickets ahead of time.
