Kansas City Pushing to Land a WNBA Franchise

T-Mobile Center

Kansas City is riding the wave of its recent sports success by pushing for a WNBA franchise.

  • Expand to the Heartland: The WNBA currently has 12 teams and will expand to 15 by 2026 with the addition of franchises in Golden State (Bay Area), Portland, and Toronto. WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert has expressed interest in adding a 16th by 2028, and Kathy Nelson, President and CEO of the Kansas City Sports Commission, thinks KC would be the perfect fit.

  • For the Girls: Nelson points to the success of the recently opened CPKC Stadium, home of the Kansas City Current and the world’s first stadium purpose-built for women’s sports. The city also already has a venue with the T-Mobile Center, which is not currently used for a professional sports franchise.
