Lighting The Winter Skies

Happy Monday, Kansas City! Kansas City's "Winter Skies" pop-up bar is back for another year, promising the perfect blend of elegance and wonder.

  • Sky View: Located at the top of Crown Center, this winter-themed bar was a massive success last year, offering nostalgic views of the city from the Skies Kansas City restaurant, known for its 360-degree vistas of downtown Kansas City and other landmarks.

  • Winter Wonderland: While the organizers are keeping this year's details under wraps for now, last year's pop-up was adorned with enchanting white lights, snowflakes, and Christmas trees, and it featured special cocktails that drew crowds.

  • Set Your Alarm: Given its popularity in 2022, it's wise to keep an eye out for tickets when they're released, as last year they sold out within minutes.

Tickets have not been released, but we’ll keep you posted when they do. In the meantime, you can follow along with the Winter Skies Facebook page.

Rolling Over To A New Location

Gallager’s Coffeehouse

The Gallagers, owners of the former Country Club Cafe, have reopened their beloved coffee shop, now known as Gallager’s Coffeehouse, at a new location after a two-year hiatus.

  • Welcome Back: The new shop, situated at 22742 Midland Drive, welcomed familiar faces eagerly awaiting their lattes, cinnamon rolls, and the famous "rollover" sandwich, a staple of the former shop.

  • Busier Than Expected: After opening last weekend, Gallagher’s Coffeehouse is feeling the love. The Gallagers are even considering offering late-night hours for students and venue rental options in the future.

  • Famous Sando: After 2 years, locals are happy to have their favorite sandwich, The Rollover, back. If you’ve never had one, The Rollover is an egg salad sandwich with ham and cheese on an Asiago bagel

Gallagher’s Coffeehouse is open from 7-2 pm Monday through Friday and 8-2 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Locals Laying Down Roots

City Of Overland Park

Overland Park is updating its codes to encourage residents to plant native landscapes in their yards and gardens.

  • Lo(KC)als: These native plants, which by definition require little to no human intervention to grow and offer ecological benefits like preventing runoff, have been historically viewed as weeds in city codes.

  • Milkweed is Back!: The proposed changes aim to standardize rules for planned native landscapes, allowing for more controlled and attractive arrangements of native plants while removing restrictions on certain species like milkweed. Milkweed is crucial to the lifecycle of pollinators like the Monarch Butterfly.

  • Modern Prairie: While the goal of the new code is to encourage native plants, which have deep root systems that help water runoff, Overland Park is maintaining that residents still have to keep grass below 8 inches. Tough news for those whose dream is to live on the prairie.

Overland Park residents interested in planting native landscapes should stay tuned for updates as the City Council considers these changes. To read more about the change, check out this in-depth article from the Shawnee Mission Post.
