Love Your Neighbors: Neighbors was launched in 2023 when owners Justin and Sam Roberts began roasting their own coffee beans in small batches. Now the non-profit coffee company opened a brick-and-mortar at 8135 The Paseo with a unique mission: employing those aging out of the foster care system.

Gather & Sip: The shop is found in a renovated auto garage, and features bright colors, an abundance of plants, garage doors, and a large outdoors space for gathering and play. The menu features coffee-based drinks using their own beans, Matcha, A grand opening celebration is planned for September 20th.

Betty in Bluhawk: Betty Rae’s is opening its newest location in the Cosentino’s Market at 8051 W. 160th St. in Overland Park with a three-day grand opening celebration August 19-21. Betty Rae’s now boasts nine KC metro locations (and two more in Omaha, NE) with future shops planned in Lawrence, Liberty, and Smithville.

Sweet Opening: Doors open at 11am tomorrow and Wednesday, and the first 50 in line get free ice cream up to two scoops each day! Tomorrow will also feature merch giveaways, as well as five chances to win free ice cream for a year by signing in (or signing up) for their loyalty programs. Wednesday features $1 off all big scoops, all day.

Education for All: BLAQUE KC is a grassroots movement of parents, teachers, young leaders, and advocates committed to improving outcomes for children in urban schools. By elevating community voices, the organization works to build trust and empower local leaders. Their mission centers on ensuring every child has access to schools that meet their needs, spark curiosity, and help them thrive.

Community Campaign: On Saturday, August 23, BLAQUE KC will host the kickoff of its What If We Can Campaign at 11 am at the Zhou B Art Center. In partnership with Transcend, the event will launch a community-driven process to design a playbook for Kansas City schools, with opportunities to join focus groups and co-create the city’s educational future.

✈️ Hello, DR: Beginning on March 7th, 2026, Southwest Airlines will offer nonstop service between Kansas City International Airport and Punta Cana International Airport with once-a-week flights on Saturdays.

💰 A Bunch from Booth: Last week, the University of Kansas received a $300 million gift from donor David Booth (namesake of KU’s football stadium). The gift is believed to be the largest gifts in the history of college athletics.

🙏 Support Local Bookstores: One of our favorite local bookstores, Monstera’s Books, was damaged in a building fire last week. While a reopneing date is TBD, you can show your support by purchasing a gift card from their website.

🏠 Coming Soon: The former Westwood View school site in Westwood that has been the center of controversy over the past few years may now become a luxury housing development.

🛒 New Name, Same Groceries: On Wednesday of last week, Sun Fresh Market in Westport closed its doors. On Thursday morning, it opened as Cosentino’s.

☕️ Blackhole, Black Coffee: Blackhole Bakery announced it will be opening a full coffee bar over the next eight weeks in partnership with Maps Coffee. Stay tuned.
