Historic Scarritt Building to Become Music-Themed Destination Hotel

The historic Scarritt Building will be converted into a music-themed destination hotel as a part of a $480 million revitalization project in downtown KCMO.

  • Grand Plan: Port KC announced that the Scarritt Building at 818 Grand Blvd, Kansas City’s second skyscraper when built in 1906, will undergo a historical transformation as a part of a larger project for the development of the 800 block of Grand Blvd. The project is in partnership with Universal Music, and is a revised proposal of the initial 800 Grand project introduced in 2024.

  • Downtown Dreamin’: The hotel will be branded as a UMusic Hotel, which currently operates one hotel in Madrid, Spain. The project will also include a landmark residential tower, 319 multi-family residences, 28,000 sqft of ground-level retail, and a 1,400-seat music & entertainment venue.

Renovations are expected to begin in 2026, with a five-year timeline for the entire project.

The 2025 Johnson County Fair is Happening Now!

Follow the yellow brick road to the 2025 Johnson County Fair, happening NOW through Saturday, August 2nd.

  • Fairest of Them All: The weeklong fair is happening now at the Johnson County Fairgrounds at 136 E Washington St. in Gardner, KS. The JOCO Fair attracts 50,000-60,000 guests each year, and features livestock shows, live music, carnival rides, and more.

  • Weekend Plans: If you’re planning a weekend visit to the fair, the carnival opens at 6pm on Friday and 4pm on Saturday. Friday’s Main Event Arena feature performances by Creedence Clearwater KC, The John Cougar Project, and Steve Miller, and Saturday’s performances include Casey Donahew, Hayden Coffman, Colby Swift and Tim Nowell.

Tulsa-based Dessert Shop Expanding to Kansas City

Sugar Llamas

A Tulsa-based dessert and coffee cafe is expanding to the Kansas City metro.

  • Sweet Llama: Sugar Llamas will open its first KC location inside Overland Park's Promontory Shopping Center (8971 Metcalf Ave.) The chain boasts 16 locations nationwide across Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Connecticut, and Kansas (currently in Wichita).

  • Sugar Rush: The shop is known for it’s mini donuts, which come in a variety of “Llama Legend” flavors.They also offer ice cream, coffee-based drinks, Red Bull mixers, and sausage rolls. Talk about a sugar rush.

An opening date has not been announced, but according to the KCBJ, Sugar Llama’s lease in the Promontory Shopping Center continues through 2035.

Power & Light Releases 2025 Chiefs Watch Party Schedule

Power & Light District

The 2025-2026 NFL season kicks off tonight (sort of), and the Power & Light District has released its Chiefs watch party schedule for the upcoming season.

  • Kingdom Parties: The watch parties kick off for the four preseason games on August 9th, which will not have a cover charge. The regular season watch parties kick off on Friday, September 5th with a Season Opener Block Party on Walnut St. starting at 5pm, before the Chiefs take on the Los Angeles Chargers at 7pm.

  • Better Than a Basement: If you can’t make it to Arrowhead for games, but want a change of pace from your basement, P&L is a great option to cheer on the Chiefs with thousands of other fans. KC Live! inside the Power & Light District recently received a $10 million upgrade including a new exterior canopy, ceiling heaters, expanded video boards, enhanced lighting, and more.
