Kansas City Voters Will Decide on a Citywide Monorail System in April

Seattle Center Monorail

KCMO voters will decide next spring whether to fund a citywide monorail system, after the City Council sent the question to the ballot last week.

  • Ride the Rail: City documents show the monorail running from KCI to the KC Zoo & Aquarium, with stops in the Northland, downtown, and more. The plan also includes electric shuttle buses that connect stations to nearby neighborhoods, a regional transportation hub at Union Station, a streetcar extension to 18th & Vine, and affordable housing along the corridor.

  • Tax Time: On April 6th, 2027, voters will decide on a new 1/4-cent sales tax and a 40-year extension of the existing 3/8-cent bus sales tax, which currently expires in 2033. The new 1/4-cent tax would also run for 40 years. A yes vote would let the city pursue federal funding for the project.
