Overland Park, Where Pickleball Is Life

Vulcan Pickleball

Overland Park has been named the nation's "most pickleball-obsessed city" and will host the Carvana Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) Tour in August.

  • The Golden Ticket: The Vulcan Kansas City Open will be a "golden ticket" qualifier event, which means those winning their division will earn a spot in the bracket at the 2023 USA Pickleball National Championships in November in Dallas.

  • Building Hype: The event will be held at Elite Tennis and Wellness and will feature more than 1,000 professional and amateur players all competing in America’s fastest-growing sport.

  • Watch or Play: The event will be one of 4 PPA tournaments available to stream on Prime Video. If you’re more into playing you can register as an amateur and practice at one of the 75 courts in Overland Park alone to hone your craft.

The Vulcan Kansas City Open will be held Aug. 24-27. For more information, or to register for the amateur tournament, you can do so on their website.

Opening

A Lesson In Brewery Discourse

Discourse Brewing

A new microbrewery called Discourse Brewing is opening this fall in an Overland Park strip mall off 97th and Metcalf.

  • Beer 101: The owner, Matt Britton, is a former high school social studies teacher who learned about the brewery business in Jacksonville, Florida where he convinced a local brewer to teach him the tricks of the trade.

  • Not Your Average Brewery: The brewery will be evenly split between a brewery on one side and a bar on the other where Britton plans to have a Nintendo nook and an area for board games, as well as partnerships with nearby restaurants to provide food options.

  • In Time for Kickoff: While Matt does not have a solid opening day selected, he’s a huge sports fan and plans to tentatively have the Brewery open for the first NFL game between the Chiefs and the Lions on September 7th.

Development

Luxury Isn’t Cheap

DLR Group

Lux Living, the St Louis Developer who has already pumped in millions into the Berkely Riverfront, is seeking $34.1 million in incentives for its proposed 14 Wyandotte apartment-and-hotel tower in Downtown Kansas City

  • Setting Sights High: The nearly $200M project would include 300 apartments and 200 hotel rooms, as well as a 358-space garage. With 27 stories planned for the corner of Wyandotte and 14th Street, the project would likely add to KC’s growing skyline.

  • Luxury Isn’t Cheap: Lux Living is seeking a 20-year property tax abatement, redirection of local economic activity taxes, and a sales tax exemption on construction materials all of which would add up to roughly $34.1 million.

  • Waiting Game: The city's Tax Increment Financing Commission will consider the developer's request on August 8. Until then, Lux Living will wait it out while they start on the Freight House Village Project elsewhere.

If approved, Lux Living hopes to have the project completed by May 2026 in a mere 28 months. You can read more about the development proposal here.
