Independence Square Chosen as Filming Location for Chiefs Hallmark Movie

The upcoming Hallmark movie Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story will feature Independence Square as a major filming location.

  • Christmas in July: Last week, crews were busy hanging lights, ribbons, and wreaths around Independence Square (Independence, MO). Filming will take place on the sidewalks and inside local businesses, and the location was chosen over the Brookside Square.

  • Red Kingdom Romance: If you’re a Kansas Citian who loves a holiday rom-com from the Hallmark Channel, you’re gonna love this. The synopsis of the movie is “Alana Higman, a die-hard Kansas City Chiefs fan and her family are competing to win the team's Fan of the Year contest, in a process judged by the director of fan engagement Derrick.”

Filming will start this week and will take place throughout the month of July. The movie will be released around Christmas time later this year.

A New Espresso Bar and Pastry Counter is Now Open in the Crossroads

Novel Restaurant

Novel Restaurant has opened an espresso bar and pastry counter attached to the restaurant at 1927 McGee St. in the Crossroads.

  • Story of Coffee: Penrose is now open on the south side of Novel, and is under the management of Kyle Evans. After a long history in the coffee industry, Evans started Cielo Coffee Roasters in Overland Park, which supplies coffee to both Penrose and Novel.

  • Sweet Pairings: In addition to the espresso bar, Penrose will serve a menu of handmade pastries including Honey Canelés, Pistachio Biscotti, French Macarons, Coffee Cake, and more!

Penrose is open Tuesday-Friday from 7-3 and Saturdays from 8-2.

Betty Rae’s Merriam Location to Open This Thursday!

This is sweet news. Betty Rae’s is celebrating its grand opening in Merriam this Thursday at 11 am!

  • Merry in Merriam: This location at 5740 Antioch Road will also serve as a production facility and Test Kitchen. Production will increase by 300% and customers will be able to provide real-time feedback on flavors being tested for retail sale.

  • FREE ICE CREAM: In celebration of the Grand Opening, Betty Rae’s is offering FREE ice cream for the first 50 guests in line on Thursday (7/11). They will also offer FREE toppings and sauces all day, FREE tastes of Test Kitchen flavors, and the chance to win FREE ice cream for a year by signing up for their loyalty program!

The Merriam location will be open Sunday-Thursday from 11-9, and Friday-Saturday from 11-10.
