Development

Riverfront Overtaken By The Current

KC Current

The Kansas City Current affiliate that it used to lease the ground underneath its new stadium has made a bid to develop the rest of the riverfront.

  • The New Front: The Port Authority of Kansas City approved a proposal by the Current to develop 10.71 more acres of the riverfront into a high-density living and working commercial development area.

  • River’s Filling Up: The proposed plan for the space would include 1,038 multifamily residences, 210,000 square feet of office space, 53,000 square feet of retail, and multiple structured and surface parking spaces. The multifamily residences would include allotted space for families earning below the median income for the area.

  • Berkley Gets Bigger: The Berkley Riverfront has already seen plenty of development in the past year as development companies have flocked to add a 240-unit apartment complex, a brand-new beer garden, and the Origin Hotel just across from the current stadium.

The developments planned are in various steps in the approval process, but one thing is sure- business will pick up when the Current’s stadium opens in 2024.

1776 Takes The Stage In KC

Evan Zimmerman/Variety

1776, the traveling Broadway musical, will take the stage July 25th through July 30th at the Starlight Theatre.

  • The Birth of a Nation: 1776 is a musical about, you guessed it, the birth of America. As 12 individuals look to settle their differences and put a new country first, this Tony Award winner for Best Musical is thoughtful in the way that it approaches the birth of the USA.

  • Herstory Re-imagined: One aspect of this play that has drawn praise from critics is the fact that it features an all-female Broadway cast as they handle history that predominantly featured all men.

  • Never Heard Of It?: If you’re a theatre novice, you may want to check out this preview of the play and see what others are saying about it. This Spotify playlist could help you get acquainted with the music as well.

Tickets can still be purchased for the musical can still be purchased through the Starlight website. Performances will start at 8 pm each evening July 25-30.

Waterbird Makes Its Nest

Waterbird Coffee

Waterbird Coffee, a new coffee shop, has found a home in the government district on the corner of 12th and McGee.

  • Friends In Business: Friends Brian Denman and Jamakee Blackburn opened the coffee shop in November. The duo had always wanted to open a coffee shop after gaining experience working for several recognizable local shops.

  • Hello, Mr. Mayor: The store has been able to grow its business by mainly leaning on patrons who work in the government buildings across the street including City and County Hall and the Richard Bolling Federal Building as well.

  • Brewing Goodness: Waterbird gets its coffee beans from the Lawrence-based coffee company, Repetition. Currently, they have myriad iced coffee options for the summer, but might we recommend the french toast flavored cold brew, Revenge of the Sip.

You can visit Waterbird Coffee every day from Monday to Saturday between the hours of 7 am and 2 pm.
