The Golden Scoop, an ice cream and coffee shop that employs adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, is opening its second location in Overland Park.

  • Golden Arches Scoop: The Golden Scoop, whose original location is in the Nall Hills Shopping Center, is expanding to its second location in a former McDonald’s near 103rd Street and U.S. Highway 69

  • Morning Commute: This week, the Overland Park Planning Commission approved a final plan for the ice cream and coffee shop’s renovation including a drive-through.

  • We’re Hiring: The second location will allow the Golden Scoop to employ roughly 50 new employees with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

If final approval is given by the OP City Council, renovations would begin early next year to be open by the spring.

The New Face Of Relaxation In KC

Sojourn Spa

Next month, the former CEO of HCA Research Medical Center is opening a luxury spa inside the new Cascade Hotel on the Plaza.

  • Chief Relaxation Officer: Ashley McClellan left her role as CEO of Research Medical to try her hand at entrepreneurship. Next month, she’ll use her medical expertise to open her luxury wellness retreat, Sojourn Spa.

  • Full Work Up: Sojourn Spa will offer myriad services to offer restoration such as Sleep Soundly, Healing Body Ritual, Anti-Aging Facials, Infrared Sauna, and 8 different types of massages.

  • Hotel Living: The 6000-square-foot spa will take full advantage of the hotel’s valet service as well as laundry services. Part of the spa’s emphasis is on making everything accessible with ADA-approved spaces.

J. Rieger & Co.

J. Rieger & Co. is racking up partnerships with local universities, offering a broader customer base.

  • Border War: J. Rieger has found success with partnering with KU and Mizzou to expand into new markets, and drive engagement from KC locals, offering special edition spirits for each university.

  • Rock Chalk: Following KU’s national championship in basketball in 2022, J. Rieger capitalized on the opportunity to partner by releasing the Rock Chalk Rye Whiskey. Since then, the distillery has also released its Wave The Wheat Vodka.

  • MIZ: After seeing success with its KU spirits on shelves, J. Rieger launched negotiations with the University of Missouri. This November, the brand launched its newest offering, Six Columns Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Beyond that, the distillery is working on co-branded canned cocktails with the university.

You can try all four options at the distillery in Electric Park as well as anywhere J. Rieger spirits are sold.
