Taking Care Of Business

Take Care by Oleo

Happy Monday, Kansas City! Oleo Coffee Roasting has opened its coffee shop in the Crossroads called Take Care.

  • Music and Dance: Take Care opened last weekend in the Crossroads. The coffee shop is owned by Christopher Oppenhuis and Mark Sappington, two coffee roasters who believe in fair trade coffee coming straight from the farm to the consumer.

  • Food And Drink: The duo, which also owns Marcell Coffee, started in the business of coffee by sourcing and manufacturing beans for specialty brands in the city like HiTides, Heirloom Bakery & Hearth, PH Coffee, and more.

  • Taking Care: After years of providing beans to coffee shops in KC, the duo is excited to open their own shop. The new location may be familiar to coffee fans, as Take Care will be taking care of the building formerly occupied by Thou Mayest Coffee.

The new store opened Friday at 419 E 18th Street in the Crossroads. The coffee shop is open every day from 7-3.

Health Care

Give Me Liberty Or Give Me Health

Mark One

The University of Kansas Health System is expanding into a Missouri suburb.

  • Liberty 🤝 KU: News broke this week about a merger between The University of Kansas Health System and Liberty Hospital. The deal will offer KU a greater presence in Missouri and offer Liberty wider access to care.

  • Shortened Commute: KU Health CEO Bob Page said that partnering with Liberty Hospital will allow patients to travel less as roughly 40 patients of Liberty travel to KU each day for care.

  • Dying Breed: Liberty Hospital was part of a rare class of hospitals that were owned by local municipalities. The only other such hospital in the area is the North Kansas City Hospital. Most hospitals formerly owned by a municipality often merge with larger health systems for expanded care.

While no details about the deal have been disclosed, it is said to be mutually beneficial. In the coming months, leaders of both hospitals will sign a non-binding letter of intent after which details about the deal will be given.
