The Porter House KC

Happy Wednesday, Kansas City! The Porter House KC is an entrepreneurial incubator that offers mentorship and space for local entrepreneurs to grow and develop their skills. In January, it will open a brick-and-mortar building to further the mission.

  • Fail Fast, Fail Often: Partnering with African-American entrepreneurs, Porter House KC has been helping emerging retail business owners hone their craft and build their businesses in an environment where it’s safe to fail.

  • Welcome To My Dojo: Founders Dan Smith and Charon Thompson are excited to open the new location at 811 East 31st Street which will offer low-cost spaces and a mentorship track to help teach entrepreneurs how to scale their businesses into thriving ventures.

  • Helping Build Bigger: The dream has become a reality thanks in part to JP Morgan Chase’s sponsorship of the non-profit. Earlier this month, the bank provided another $400,000 to further the mission.

Just Play Sports Solutions

Austin Barone became the latest Kansas City entrepreneur to be named to the Forbes 30 under 30 list for his sports tech company.

  • NFL, TikTok, KC: Barone was named to the 30 under 30 list in the sports category, showing up next to names like Lamar Jackson and Olivia Dunn.

  • Sports As A Business: Barone is the CEO and founder of Just Play Sports Solutions, a tech company he built while playing football for KU. Just Play Sports Solutions manages and automates tasks like scouting and advanced data analysis.

  • More Sports, More Opportunities: Just Play Sports Solutions has grown rapidly over the last 5 years since launching a lacrosse platform in 2018 to pair with football and basketball. They plan to launch a platform for hockey and soccer next year.

Maybe you haven’t heard, but KCI was recently renovated and now it’s receiving nominations as one of the best airports in the United States.

  • Magnificent 6: Last month at the TPG Awards in New York, The Points Guy, a website that focuses on travel across the globe, highlighted KCI as one of the six "spotlight moments" of 2023.

  • Oh, You Fancy, Huh?: The Points Guy gave a glowing review in February of the new airport highlighting the seamless check-in process, the top-notch amenities, and the modern design.

  • Top Flight: Earlier this year, KCI also received the award for best airport in the US according to Travel Awaits. The publication put KC ahead of airports like Chicago and Atlanta.

The new airport also improved in rankings from The Wall Street Journal and JD Power & Associates. In the JD Power survey, the airport improved from 3rd lowest to 13th.
