The Building of a Royal Home

Kansas City Royals

The Kansas City Royals’ search for a new home has now been narrowed down to two options that are both within a few miles of downtown.

  • Home Plate: The final two locations in the running are the East Village site, just east of the KCPD Headquarters, northeast of 12th and Cherry. As well a a site smack in the middle of North Kansas City, near 18th Avenue and Fayette.

  • Bye Jackson?: One property would require the Royals to leave their long-standing home in Jackson County for Clay County, just north of the river, which would be a huge blow to the Jackson County tax revenue generated from ticket sales, parking, etc.

  • Labor Deal: Local groups representing the labor that would staff this new stadium like StandUp KC say that they would need a seat at the table to move forward once the new location is set.

Residents in either county would have to know the planned location by November so that they can vote on the potential extra expense to local taxpayers.

Business

A Rieger Abroad

J. Rieger Co.

J. Rieger Co, best known for their award-winning spirits, recently won the 2023 Weida Award for International Small Business of the Year from the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce.

  • Serving KC First: Over the last 12 months, J. Rieger has welcomed over 120,000 people into their doors in the East Bottoms. A surprisingly high number for the founders who wanted to simply revitalize their family’s distillery lost to prohibition.

  • Now the World: Since its conception in 2014, they have had sights set on expanding internationally to bring a taste of KC spirits to the world. With sales in the Netherlands and soon to be Asia, they are close to having fulfilled that vision.

  • Winners Win: Beyond the winning of the International Small Business of the Year, J. Rieger has pulled in all sorts of hardware after winning double gold for their Straight Bourbon Whiskey earlier this year.

You can visit them at their local distillery in Electric Park daily starting at 11am.

Real Estate

Saved by the Bell

Chris Sally

A local Kansas City developer came in at the last second to save the 149-year-old Seiden's Furs building at 935 Broadway from demolition days after the city announced plans to destroy it.

  • The Deal: Local developer, Chris Sally of Iconic Developments, put the building under contract effectively saving it just five days after the city announced plans to destroy the Garment District building that had stood since 1874.

  • The Building: The Seiden’s Furs building was originally built by Bracket Brothers Drug Store, changing to Seidens in the 1920s until the business’ collapse in 2007.

  • Local Uproar: The plans to demolish the building were met with immense backlash from the community as locals put together a campaign to save the oldest building in KC’s Central Business District.

Sally hasn’t given any indication as to what he plans to do with the building after he renovates it, but looks at it as a passion project to take care of the community and the historical things in it.
