Historic Rio Theatre Could Reopen With a Heidi Gardner Connection
The historic Rio Theatre, closed since the pandemic hit in 2020, could reopen as the Dream Theatre, with possible ties to KC native and former SNL star Heidi Gardner.
Dream Big: A group called Dream Theatre, LLC has pitched the city on restoring and reopening the theater. Overland Park is considering up to $425,000 in assistance: up to $200,000 toward buying the property and up to $225,000 to reimburse construction. The group’s flyer promises a “Midwest Picture Palace,” and the Rio’s iconic Art Deco look is staying.
Star Power: Gardner shared the Dream Theatre flyer on Instagram, and the LLC was organized by Nat Smith, an actor and writer who’s worked on Gardner’s SNL projects. She also attended the group’s recent Terminator 2 screening, though her exact role hasn’t been confirmed.
