Walmart And Kansas Have Beef

McCownGordon Construction

Walmart confirmed this week that they will be opening a new $257 million beef packaging and distribution facility in Olathe- the first of its kind for America’s largest box store retailer.

  • Where’s the Beef: The new 330,000-square-foot facility will be located off Highway 169 and 167th Street. The facility could create up to 1,000 jobs to build the project and add an additional almost 700 jobs to maintain and operate.

  • Walmart Beefing Up: This move comes thanks to Walmart’s desire to move beef production under their own brand. While not a new concept, think Kirkland brands with Costco, this marks the first time a Walmart beef facility will be able to process, package, and distribute beef in-house.

  • Welcome To the Mid-Best: With this news coming on the heels of Panasonic’s $4B investment into the area, Kansas City seems to be picking up steam in the production and supply chain industries once again thanks to its central location within the US.

Walmart plans to hire McCownGordon Construction Co. for the construction that will break ground this fall and finish in mid-2025.

Transportation

Shortening Your Commute

KC Daily

The City of Kansas City called for proposals from local engineering firms to begin finding ways to create rapid transit from the newly renovated KCI to Downtown Kansas City.

  • Travel Boom: The move comes in part due to the massive influx of visitors the city expects to see in 2026 due to the World Cup, as well as a need to make traveling to the newly built airport an easier trip for local residents who helped pay for the project. This is the same problem that KCATA took on last month as they research a train that would connect the larger metro.

  • Propose Away: The City’s requests for the proposals ask for local engineering firms to create a scope of work that would define the route, vehicles needed, cost to build, timeline, funding, and if the solution would be free or require a fee.

  • You Did This: This move comes as the solution to the problem KC seems to have created itself when instead of locating the airport closer to downtown, they chose to double down and build the new terminal in the same location that MCI already stood.

The Campground Owner to Open Cocktail Bar

Foxtrot Studio

The owners of the beloved West Bottoms restaurant Campground are opening a new small-batch cocktail bar in KCK.

  • Sagebrush: The new cocktail bar, Sagebrush, will be opening in the Rosedale neighborhood of KCK on Southwest Boulevard. The Bar will serve cocktails made from ingredients and syrups made in-house.

  • Not Going Anywhere: Don’t worry, Campground is here to stay as well. Sagebrush is a passion project of the owner who always intended for Campground to function as more of a bar until its success with food.

  • Sharing Space: The bar will open in the same building as Foxtrot Studio and Cafe, currently a men’s attire store that will be rebranded into a garden house focusing on southwest plants.

No timeline has been set for the cocktail bar to open. Its new roommate Foxtrot only unpacked its bags in January.
