Where The Wild Ferns Are

In The Lowest Ferns

Happy Thursday, Kansas City! A new moody HIFI lounge and communal space called In The Lowest Ferns from the creative group, Nomada, is opening soon.

  • Get Here A$AP: Nomada is a conceptual design, branding, and production firm that we wrote about earlier this year when they filmed a music video for rapper A$AP Rocky in Kansas City’s West Bottoms.

  • Where The Wild Ferns Are: Now the firm is taking on a new venture, opening up a new space in the West Bottoms for events, concerts, and other creative outlets.

  • The Vibiest Vibes: The space has been meticulously crafted with an industrial garden interior, fancy leather seating, and a state-of-the-art DJ booth for unparalleled artistic events and experiences.

The new HIFI lounge opens the weekend of January 12. Follow In The Lowest Ferns’ Instagram for tickets and a schedule of events coming soon.

Government

You Shall Not Pass

Kansas City Royals

This week, Kansas City officials rejected an ordinance that would have allowed for a 3/8 cent sales tax to show on April’s Ballot to fund the Royals’ new stadium.

  • Pass Or Fail: Monday, before an overflow crowd, city representatives voted down a 40-year extension of the 3/8 cent sales tax that the Royals would need to fund their new stadium. An ordinance would need to pass by January 23rd to appear on April ballots.

  • We’re Going Striking!: One potential barrier comes from the worker’s unions lobbying for a Community Benefits Agreement that they believe is a crucial piece to protect stadium employees going forward.

  • The North Is Calling: Just because the drama is taking place in Jackson County, don’t think the Clay County stadium in NKC is off the table. A representative from Clay County said it’s still in negotiations to create a proposal that offers the best return on investment for NKC citizens.

It’s almost a certainty that this ordinance will be up for a vote again in the coming weeks. Once KC and the Royals can create a more favorable proposal including the benefits agreement, it’s likely the language will make it to voting ballots in April.

Development

Chipotle Handing Out More Than Burritos

KC Daily

A Kansas ag-tech startup is receiving funding from Chipotle restaurants to fuel the growth of cleaner, more efficient crop harvesting.

  • Green Thumb Cog: Greenfield Incorporated, a startup that touts chemical-free food at scale, is a startup just outside of the KC metro that uses AI robotics to cut weeds in broadacre crops.

  • More Than Burritos: Chipotle Mexican Grill’s $50 million Cultivate Next venture fund is placing a minority investment into Greenfield as the company searches for the future of sustainable agriculture.

  • Bug Repellent: One major benefit provided by Greenfield’s autonomous robots is that because they can cut weeds day and night, they can help drastically cut down on pesticides, reducing risk to the farmers and the consumer.

While no details about the investment have been released, it’s clear that Greenfield Inc. is becoming a leading alternative to herbicides in the industry.
