KC's Giant World Cup Heart Could Become Permanent

KC Daily
KCMO Mayor Quinton Lucas said the city is exploring ways to keep the 65-foot-tall heart structure from the FIFA Fan Festival, as well as how to pay for it.
Red Heart, Red Kingdom: Designed by Populous, the glowing red Heart Gateway became the defining image of KC's World Cup experience almost immediately. Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt predicted that the heart would be the defining photo for decades to come. Over 310,000 people attended Fan Fest, and the heart became a backdrop for engagement photos, family photos, and selfies from fans representing 131 different nations.
What’s Next: Mayor Lucas favors keeping the heart near Penn Valley Park and the National WWI Museum and Memorial, saying it "drives more energy" to that area. One funding option being explored is the city's 1% art requirement for major projects, with the new Royals stadium as a potential source.

Flower Child to Open in Prairie Village on August 11th
Flower Child, an Arizona-based health-focused fast-casual chain, will open in Prairie Village on Tuesday, August 11th.
Smell the Flowers: Flower Child will open inside Corinth Quarter, and be the restaurant’s 45th location nationwide and first in the state of Kansas. It will operate in a 3,700+ square-foot space for dine-in, takeout, curbside pickup, and delivery through the Flower Child app.
Fresh Eats: The menu at Flower Child consists of salads, bowls, wraps, and more, all made from fresh, organic ingredients. I had the chance to visit Flower Child in Fort Worth, TX, earlier this year, and was blown away by the Summer Ingredient Salad, the Yellowfin Tuna Poke bowl, and the Lemon Olive Oil Cake. Safe to say I’m excited for this.
Flower Child Prairie Village will be located at 3915 W. 83rd St.

A 4-Mile Stretch of I-70 is Closing for 11 Months Starting Next Year
MoDOT's Improve I-70 KC project is entering its most significant phase yet: an 11-month full closure of I-70 from Prospect Ave. to Van Brunt Blvd. — a ~4-mile section running from downtown toward the Truman Sports Complex.
Buckle Up: The $237 million project has been underway since Spring 2025, with MoDOT keeping three lanes open in each direction through the World Cup. Phase 3 will tackle the mainline bridge and roadway reconstruction along the corridor. The project overall includes replacing 15 bridges, rehabilitating seven more, adding a fourth eastbound lane from Prospect to Manchester, reconstructing the Benton and Jackson curves, and improving pedestrian and bicycle connectivity throughout.
Plan Ahead: The closure is still a year out (set to begin in 2027), but worth knowing now if you regularly travel to the East Side, Blue Springs, Independence, or the stadiums. Completion is scheduled for Spring 2028.
MoDot used the viral “Netflix Documentary” trend to announce the closure on social media. Check it out.
