Your Friendly Neighborhood Wine Bar

Vita’s Place

A new wine bar in Brookside is putting in the finishing touches before opening in the Crestwood Shops.

  • East Coast Inspiration: Owners Ryan and Jenny Sciara were inspired to start a small, neighborhood wine bar after a visit to New York, where the concept is much more common than it is in KC. Even the interior is inspired by the East Coast, guided by John O’Brien who also designed KC favorites such as Bacaro Primo, Earl’s Premier, and Golden Ox.

  • Grandma Would be Proud: The bar will be called Vita’s Place, which is taken after Ryan’s grandmother. The space will be small (only seating thirty-four upstairs and twenty in the basement) but will offer over 200 wines. The bar will also serve gin-based drinks and offer a “vermouth hour”.

  • Experienced in Wine: The Sciara’s are not new to the world of wine, they own Underdog Wine Co. which is just a few doors down in the Crestwood Shops. Underdog offers a wine club and focuses on hand-selected small-production wines.

Vita’s Place is planning on opening in mid-December with the hours of 3-10 pm Wednesday through Sunday.

Patience Is Key

Kansas City Business Journal

An eye-catching building in Waldo that has sat vacant for years may finally be coming back to life.

  • Hard to Miss: The building that sits at the corner of Gregory and Wyandotte once housed BrandsMart, a discount electronic store, until 2004. The unique architecture had residents dreaming of potential uses to boost the neighborhood, but often left them frustrated.

  • The Plans: The owner of the building, Abdiana Properties, has plans to include a microbrewery, restaurant, coffee shop and bakery, and residential units. According to city filings, the structure has been called “Icehouse” which pays tribute to the American Ice Co., which was the original occupant in 1927.

  • Well, We’re Waiting!: The building has seen small changes over the years, but nothing has ever come to fruition. Waldo and Brookside residents will keep their fingers crossed in hopes that this time the building will have life once again.
