KC Zoo & Aquarium Wins Top Honors for the 2026 Green Award

Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium

The Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium took home Top Honors for the 2026 Green Award from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

  • Going Green: The win recognized the Zoo’s Pathway to Net Zero plan. Electric trains, a tram, and golf carts save 6,660 gallons of gas a year, and solar panels now cover nine buildings. Sobela Ocean Aquarium’s gravity-fed filtration saves 500,000+ gallons of water annually, and a partnership with KC Can Compost has diverted 35 tons of food waste since 2023.

  • Gold Standard: At the same conference in Portland, the AZA also re-accredited the Zoo for another five years. Accreditation covers everything from animal care to safety, and only about 10% of the 2,150 USDA-licensed animal exhibitors in the country earn it.
