Development

Leawood’s Next Venture Is Up For A Vote

Oddo Development

The next phases of the East Village of Leawood development, a plan that would develop more than 116 acres of vacant land, are moving through City Hall.

  • The Plan: The East Village of Leawood development would add more than 600 luxury apartments, million-dollar homes, duplexes, and an assisted living facility. Other residential developments would include 26 single-family homes, 12 luxury duplexes, and 26 apartment buildings alongside a grocery store, retail, restaurants, offices, and green space.

  • The Controversy: The first waves of development were tense, with residents raising concerns over traffic, noise, density, and aesthetics. This led to concessions from the developer and a narrow 5-4 vote in the city council. The later stages of the development have faced less opposition and were approved with a recent vote of 5-2.

  • The Last Push: The Leawood Planning Commission approved the third and fourth phases, which include more housing and a park, and are currently under review by the city council, and will be discussed on August 7th.

Holidays

National Chicken Wings Day Is Saturday

KC Daily

Saturday is National Chicken Wing Day, and Kansas City is the perfect city to try new wings. So if your friends suggest Buffalo Wild Wings (again), maybe try to steer them toward our list of the best chicken wings in Kansas City.

  • The Peanut: The Peanut has long been the first place that comes to mind when Kansas Citians think of wings. In 8 locations across the metro, these giant buffalo wings will tide over any appetite. Just make sure you’re up for it if you get the dozen.

  • Al’s Bar: Al Burns moved to Kansas City from Buffalo over 25 years ago and brought the wings with him. His Parkville staple is a no-frills, no-fuss bar and grill that has people coming back over and over for his famous wings.

  • Wings Cafe: Located in Westport and the Northland, with nearly 20 flavors of wet and dry rubs, there is something for every palate at Wings Cafe. In addition to wings, they offer tenders, sandwiches, fish, and more

  • CM Chicken: Having a Korean fried chicken spot in Overland Park on a list of best wings may seem questionable, but if you’ve had their wings you know why they're included. We ordered the Red Hot Pepper whole chicken (including wings and tenders) and were shocked by the crispiness and flavor.

  • Helen’s JAD Bar and Grill: The Northland’s favorite dive bar (JAD stands for Just Another Dive) is an unassuming powerhouse in the KC wings scene. If you’re not afraid of a little heat, order the Uber wings with a side of crispy fries and thank us later.

  • Q39: It’s only fitting that one of the biggest names in BBQ in Kansas City knows how to make some killer wings. Their “Best Wings on the Planet” are perfectly smoked and sauced with their own chipotle BBQ.
